Perinatal Stroke: Longitudinal Assessment of Infant Brain Organization and Recovery through Neuroexcitability, Neuroimaging and Motor Development

Dates: July 2021 – June 2026
Project #: NIH 1R01HD098202-01A1
Funding Agency: NIH/NICHD/NINDS
PI: Gillick
ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT number): NCT05013736

Brief Explanation: This study serves to assess, over the first two years of life, concurrent recovery and development of the infant brain and resultant function after perinatal stroke. As PI, Dr. Gillick directs all aspects of the study including training, regulatory oversight, recruitment, enrollment, study execution, analysis and deliverables.

Motion-Robust Relaxometry for Infant Neuroimaging

Dates: September 2022 – August 2026
Project #: NIH 1R01HD108868-01A1
Funding Agency: NIH/NICHD
PI: Alexander (Director/PI), Kecskemeti (MPI), Gillick (MPI)

Brief Explanation: This project will develop, optimize and evaluate novel 3D radial imaging technologies for multimodal structural imaging and quantitative relaxometry for studies in sleeping infants and toddlers. The outcome will be a fast, ultra-quiet imaging technique capable of providing imaging maps of quantitative relaxation times that are robust to nearly all motions. As MPI, Dr. Gillick directs the infant/cerebral palsy aspect of the study including training, regulatory oversight, recruitment, enrollment, study execution, analysis and deliverables.

Teleneuromodulation in Children with Cerebral Palsy

Dates: May 2021 – April 2023
Project #: N/A
Funding Agency: 2020 American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine Research Grant, funded by the NIH through the National Pediatric Rehabilitation Resource Center
PI: Gillick
ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT Number): NCT05071586

Brief Explanation: This study will investigate an open label telehealth intervention of transcranial direct current stimulation in children with cerebral palsy supervised in the home setting. As PI, Dr. Gillick directs all aspects of the study including training, regulatory oversight, recruitment, enrollment, study execution, analysis and deliverables.

Establishing the clinical utility of sensorimotor adaptation for speech rehabilitation

Dates: July 1, 2021-June 30, 2026
Project #: R01 DC019134-01A1
Funding Agency: NIH/National Institutes of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders
PI(s): Niziolek/Parrell
Role: Co-Investigator
ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT Number): NCT05286658

Brief Explanation: The proposed studies refine a well-studied mechanism of speech learning, sensorimotor adaptation, to maximize its effects on intelligibility. By directly increasing vowel distinctiveness in speakers, and by characterizing mechanisms underlying the variability, generalization, and retention of learning, this project takes the first steps to translate sensorimotor adaptation into a clinical tool for improving the efficacy of spoken communication. Dr. Gillick’s role will be in leading the non-invasive brain stimulation training, assessments and analysis.

Flexibility in Infant Skill Acquisition

Dates: September 2018-August 2025
Project #: NIH R01HD033486
Funding Agency: National Institutes of Health/NICHD
PI:  Adolph
Role: Scientific Advisory Committee Member

Brief Explanation: To further the understanding of developing motor milestones in the infant population. Dr. Gillick’s role is to act as an advisor towards the study design, execution and interpretation of data.

Pediatric Teleneuromodulation

Dates: 2022-2024
Project #: N/A
Funding Agency: Research Foundation of Cerebral Palsy Alliance, Sydney, Australia
PI: Gillick (Director/PI), Novak (MPI), Fahey (MPI)

Brief Explanation: This study will investigate an open label telehealth intervention of transcranial direct current stimulation in children with cerebral palsy supervised in the home setting. As Co-PI/Director, Dr. Gillick will oversee all aspects of the study including training, regulatory oversight, recruitment, enrollment, study execution, analysis and deliverables.

Diversity in Pediatric Neuromodulation

Dates: 2022-2023
Project #: N/A
Funding Agency: UW-Madison, Waisman IDDRC Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Pilot Funding
PI: Gillick

Brief Explanation: This project will develop a plan to team with a community advocate and develop a laboratory Multilingual Access Program (MAP) to convert our current website to Spanish and allow Spanish-speaking monolingual families to participate in our research studies. As PI, Dr. Gillick directs the laboratory including diversity/equity/inclusion/access training, regulatory oversight, recruitment, enrollment, study execution, analysis and deliverables.
