About me: I am fortunate to be the Martin Lenz Harrison Land Grant Professor of Pediatrics, Obstetrics/gynecology, and Developmental Psychology at the University of Minnesota. I am a neonatologist by training and direct the Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain at the U of M and am an expert in early life environment, specifically nutrition, and the developing brain. I’ve been involved in studies of neural plasticity for over 40 years.

What motivates me: the NICU follow-up clinic is one of my biggest motivators because it shows me how remarkably resilient infants and children are. Pediatricians like me are by nature full of hope for the future and nothing expresses that better than the outcomes of the babies following newborn intensive care.  They have their whole life in front of them and their remarkable neural plasticity can make help them achieve their wonderful outcomes.
