Biography

Dr. Melisa Carrasco McCaul is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She serves as Director of Neonatal Neurology within the Division of Pediatric Neurology and also provides clinical care in the University of Wisconsin Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. Dr. Carrasco McCaul received her B.S. Intensive in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from Yale University in 2005. She earned her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Michigan in 2012 and her M.D. from the University of Rochester in 2014. She subsequently completed residency training in Pediatric Neurology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2019, followed by fellowship training in Neonatal Neurology at Johns Hopkins in 2020 and Pediatric Epilepsy at the University of Michigan in 2021. Dr. Carrasco McCaul is a clinician-scientist whose work focuses on early childhood neurodevelopment, particularly among children with perinatal brain injury and epilepsy. Her research program investigates the early and long-term cognitive development of infants and young children, including both typically developing children and those at increased risk for neurodevelopmental disability. She seeks to identify imaging, neurophysiological, and behavioral biomarkers of emerging cognitive and executive dysfunction, with the ultimate goal of improving early identification and informing targeted interventions for children at risk.
